Teens drown in wadi as heavy rains prompt safety warning

Muscat: As governorates in various parts of the Sultanate begin to experience heavy rainfall and floods, two teenage boys tragically lost their lives after they drowned in a water pond in Wilayat of Jalan Bani Bu Ali, according to the Public Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulance (PACDA).
The 13 and 15-year-old Omani boys were already deceased by the time rescue teams arrived. In a statement, PACDA said: “The water rescue team from the Department of Civil Defence and Ambulance in Southern Sharqiyah dealt with a report of two children drowning in a pool in Wadi Saal area in Wilayat Jalan Bani Bu Ali. The two children were already dead when the authorities recovered their bodies.” Over the weekend, the Sultanate began experiencing rains of varying intensity as a result of a low-pressure system centred in the Arabian Peninsula. According to the Public Authority for Civil Aviation, the peak of the rains will be on Sunday, May 19 and on Monday, May 20.
The South Al Sharqiyah and Dhofar governorates have been experiencing heavy rainfall since Friday. The low pressure is expected to last until May 22.
As the low-pressure closes in, authorities have warned people to stay safe and avoid taking risks. Muscat Municipality warned the public to stay away from water gathered around light poles, and urged the public to call the toll free number 1111 if they notice any electrical or dangerous water pools at any lighting poles.
The ROP has a message directed to all parents: “Dear parent; don’t leave your children alone near water ponds during rain and when wadis begin to flow. Always make sure they are close to you and keep an eye on them to avoid drownings.”
