Muscat: Black fungus is not related to coronavirus infection, a consultant in infectious diseases said and added that the three COVID-19 patients infected with black fungus in Oman were diabetic and aged between 45 and 65.
In an interview with Oman TV, Dr Amal Bint Saif Al Maani, a consultant in infectious diseases and infection control at the Ministry of Health, said that black fungus or Mucormycosis is not a new or emerging disease. Dr Maani said it is an infection that has been seen in the past and is not related to COVID-19.
"Black fungus is linked to immunodeficiency, whether it is congenital, acquired as a result of chronic diseases such as diabetes or is a result of taking some immunosuppressive drugs to treat other diseases," Dr Maani added.
