Muscat: The Royal Hospital has succeeded for the first time in the Sultanate of Oman in treating a patient suffering from a tumour in the heart muscle.
"A specialised medical team from the National Oncology Centre at the Royal Hospital succeeded for the first time in the Sultanate of Oman in treating a patient with a tumour in the heart muscle. The patient underwent a local excision of the tumour with the presence of tumor remnants, followed intensive radiotherapy, under continuous follow-ups and monitoring, " Oman News Agency (ONA) said in a statement.
Dr. Thuraya bint Nasser Al Hajari, consultant and head of the radiotherapy department at the National Oncology Centre at the Royal Hospital said that the danger of performing such operations lies in terms of the therapeutic and radiological procedure and the rarity of such cases globally.
"The danger is also represented in focusing radiation doses on the tumour during the continuous movement of the heart, without touching the surrounding tissues and ensuring that they are not damaged, " Dr Thuraya added.
