Muscat: The role of sports medicine in a sportspersons’ career and the importance of a prevention of sports injuries and early diagnosis of injuries were among the many topics discussed at a sports medicine symposium held on Monday.
Organised by the Oman Olympic Committee (OOC) and represented by Oman Sports Medicine and Anti-Doping Committee, the sports medicine symposium was held in cooperation with Oman International Hospital at the hospital premises.
The symposium aimed to raise awareness of the importance of having trained medical staff in stadiums for all kinds of sports practiced in Oman.
Emphasis was also made on the importance of medical examination for players of different ages.
Oman’s football legend Ali Al Habsi was the chief guest at the symposium that was attended by Khalid bin Muhammad Al Zubair, OOC president, Taha Al Kishry, OOC secretary-general and a number of OOC board members, members of Oman Sports Medicine and Anti-Doping Committee, members of sports federations and committees, physiotherapists, physical therapists and physical trainers.
Sports medicine specialization was highlighted besides topics on ways to prevent injury and rehabilitation were also discussed. A number of doctors, nurses, and physiotherapists and rehabilitation specialists attended the symposium.
Other topics included common sports injuries, anti-doping measures and the importance of raising awareness among young athletes and ways to provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) at the venue were discussed.
Marcelo Pereira, CEO of Oman International Hospital, welcomed the guests while Dr Masoud Al Riyami, chairman of Oman Sports Medicine and Anti-Doping Committee, gave an introductory address.
Among the other speakers were Dr Sulaiman Al Maawali, vice-chairman of the committee, and Khadija Al Busafia and Tahira Al Zadjali, nurses at the hospital.
Later, Dr Al Riyami presented a paper where he detailed about common sports injuries, relationship between the player's age and injury and early diagnosis of injury. Shuaib Al Zadjali, a member of Oman Sports Medicine and Anti-Doping Committee, presented the second working paper on anti-doping in the field of sport. The other scientific session included two working papers, presented by Majid Al Wardi, a member of the committee, and Dr Muhammad Younis, director of the medical rehabilitation department at Oman International Hospital.
