Muscat: 500 kilograms of wheat seed were distributed to farmers in Al Buraimi Governorate to plant and produce it during the next season on an area of more than 200 acres.

During the past seasons, the governorate witnessed a remarkable expansion in the areas cultivated for the wheat crop.

Eng. Nasser bin Ali Al Marshodi, Director General of the Directorate General of Agricultural Wealth and Water Resources in Al Buraimi Governorate, said: "There is an increase in the cultivated areas of the wheat crop in the governorate, due to its great importance, as it is one of the strategic crops in the Sultanate of Oman due to its effective contribution to the food security system. Of the crops that are grown in the winter period, its water needs during this period are low.

He added that there is a future plan to expand the cultivation during the next season, where more than 200 acres will be cultivated within the approved investment projects in the governorate.

He added that the product is being marketed in the local markets in Al Buraimi Governorate and neighboring governorates, and there is an agreement between the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources and the Oman Flour Mills Company to purchase production from farmers and convert it into flour, and to market the product in all governorates of the Sultanate of Oman.
