MuscatA specialised surgical team at the Royal Hospital succeeded in performing a surgery to remove the right lung and part of the trachea of a patient. The surgery is the first of its kind in the Sultanate of Oman and one of the rare operations in the world.

Dr. Aziza Bint Nasser Al Rawahi, Consultant Upper Gastrointestinal and Thoracic Surgeon at the Royal Hospital, explained that lung removal is a major surgical procedure, and trachea reconstruction surgery is a delicate, complex and uncommon surgery. Noting that the operation took 8 to 9 hours.

She said that the operation was performed on a patient who was suffering from a cancerous tumor centered in the trachea and the main bronchi of the right lung, as she was diagnosed through CT scans and bronchoscopy, and then examinations were performed to rule out the spread of cancer, in addition to performing lung function tests to ensure that the patient was able to survive with one lung.

Al Rawahi indicated that the case was presented to the Chest Tumor Board at the Royal Hospital, and a decision was taken to perform an operation to remove the tumor as a radical treatment for the tumor, stressing that the patient, after the operation and follow- up treatment, is in good health and left the hospital without any complications.

"The death rate of this type with the operation and anesthesia is 6 percent, while the risk and complications rate reaches 50 percent. Therefore, there were efforts made by the thoracic surgery team in the perioperative period to ensure that the operation proceeded smoothly and the patient's safety and recovery without any complications," Al-Rawahi added.

Al-Rawahi reported that discussing surgical treatment options with the patient and instructions before and after the operation to prepare her, and her understanding of these procedures helped to reduce anxiety and distress, and necessitated several visits and interviews with the surgeon, in addition to explaining the operation and assisting the patient after the operation.

Dr. Aziza Al-Rawahi stressed that performing this qualitative operation will open the door for other operations in the coming time, through close cooperation between the surgical, radiology, anesthesiology and nursing teams at the Royal Hospital, and working with well-studied plans to maintain the patient Safety during and after the operation, which raises the degree of success of any operation.

The Royal Hospital is keen to provide the best specialised health care based on the latest medical and therapeutic technology in the world under the supervision of a group of highly skilled and qualified doctors and surgeons.
