Muscat: A specialised medical team at Al Nahdha Hospital conducted 4 “cochlear implants under local anesthesia” for adults, marking the recent launch of this service in Oman.
Dr. Mohammed Abdullah Al Rahbi, ENT Consultant and Surgeon at Al Nahdda Hospital, told Oman News Agency (ONA) that the procedure helps cut down operation time and avoid complications associated with general anaesthesia.
The method was particularly useful for those suffering from chronic diseases, he added.
Al Rahbi pointed out that an implant of this type takes 1 to 3 hours, depending on a patient’s condition.
He explained that a cochlear implant involves fixing a small electronic device that can help provide a sense of sound to a person who is profoundly hard-of-hearing.
“Al Nahdda Hospital performed more than 60 cochlear implants over the past year, and we are working hard to reduce waiting lists for surgeries by conducting more operations of this type in the near future,” said Al Rahbi.
