Muscat : The tropical cyclone 'Tej' began to gradually weaken and its classification is reduced to a Category 2 tropical cyclone, Oman Meteorology said.
A statement issued online by Oman Meteorology said :" Tej's tropical condition begins to gradually weaken and its classification is reduced to a category 2 tropical cyclone, with the possibility of its classification being reduced within the next 12 hours to a category 1 tropical cyclone."
Oman Meteorology said on Sunday, October 22, 2023, the tropical cyclone 'tej' was classified as a Category 3 tropical cyclone . The cyclone center was 400 kilometers away from the coasts.
Heavy rainfall in Oman
Rainfall was witnessed over some Willayats of Dhofar Governorate as heavy rainfalls from the direct effect of the tropical cyclone 'Tej', Oman Meteorology said in its warning No.4 on the tropical cyclone.
The weather charts analysis at the National Multi Hazards & Early Warning Center indicate that the tropical cyclone ) lay centered on Latitude 14.10 ° N and Longitude 53.48 ° E . and is around 318 km from the nearest coast of Oman. Wind speed around the center is estimated to be between 95 to 110 Knots .
The forecasts suggest that the system will continue to move west towards the coasts of Dhofar Governorate and the Republic of Yemen ( Al Mahra ).
The direct impact is expected to increase on Dhofar and Al Wusta Governorates with heavy downpour ( 100-300 ) mm with expected flow of wadis and fresh to very severe blowing winds ( 40-70 ) knots.
The sea is expected to be very rough ranging between ( 8-11 ) m. In addition, storm surge might cause sea water inundation over low level coastal areas.
The Civil Aviation Authority advises all to take maximum precautions and not to risk crossing valleys and to avoid low - lying areas . It is also advised to avoid the sea during this period.
