Oman welcomes UN vote on Palestine
The UN General Assembly

Muscat: The Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the Sultanate of Oman welcomed the overwhelming majority vote of the members of the United Nations General Assembly on a resolution supporting Palestine's right ‬⁩ to obtain full membership in the United Nations.

The ministry underscored the potentially transformative impact of the global majority's appeal to the Security Council to recognize the State of Palestine. This is the practical path that will pave the way for the two-state solution and the establishment of a just peace in accordance with the resolutions of international legitimacy.

On Friday, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly approved a resolution that would grant new "rights and privileges" to Palestine by a vote of 143 to 9 with 25 abstentions. The vote also recognises Palestine's right to become the 194th member of the body.

This second part means that a Palestinian membership bid will be forwarded to the UN Security Council to "reconsider the matter favourably." However, a Palestinian bid submitted to the Security Council last month was vetoed by the United States, a move that is expected to be repeated despite widespread support in the General Assembly.
