First Oman Clubs Badminton Championship from May 16

MUSCAT: The inaugural edition of the Oman Clubs Badminton Championship (for men), organised by the Oman Racket Sports Committee (ORSC), will be held at the AMM Arena in Muscat from May 16-19.

According to a press release from ORSC, the maiden tournament will feature players from a a total of 12 clubs representing five governorates across Oman - Muscat, North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah Al Sharqiyah South and Dhofar.

The clubs, which have confirmed their entries in the championship are Al Amerat, Al Kamil Wal Wafi, Bausher, Oman, Seeb, Al Shabab, Saham, Majees, Salalah, Masirah, Qurayat, and Ibri.

It may be mentioned that ORSC had organised the first edition of badminton tournaments for girls as part of the Women’s Sports activities in October 2023 in collaboration with the Women’s Sports Department at the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Youth.

At the first clubs’ championship for men, there will be three events. The senior category has a field of 30 players while 19 players are registered in the doubles category and 17 players will vie for the U15 title.

Top-four players in the three categories will receive cash prizes along with medals and trophies.

International umpire Seyed Omid Moghadaszadeh from Iran, has been invited to officiate as chief tournament referee. He will be assisted by eight umpiresincluding five Omanis. Oman’s Ahmed Al Mafaraji has been named the assistant tournament umpire.

Dr. Abdulrahim bin Musallam Al Droushi, ORSC chairman, said: “We are happy with the response from the clubs as we have got 12 in our first edition. It reflects the interest of players and clubs in the sport.”
