Transport ministry launches virtual tour service in Oman

Muscat: Acting in cooperation with the National Survey Authority (NSA) for geospatial information and Google company, the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology has launched the first phase of a virtual tour project in the Sultanate of Oman.

The launch ceremony was held under the auspices of Dr. Mohammed Nasser Al Zaabi, Secretary General of the Ministry of Defence.

The service seeks to enable users around the world to explore Oman’s natural landscapes, historical landmarks and modern infrastructure through a unique virtual experience.

The event underlined the significance of the service in enhancing Oman's digital presence and its potential impact on different sectors like tourism and business development. A virtual experience was also presented, allowing attendees to explore some of Oman's landmarks and natural places. Emphasis was laid on the second phase of the plan that aims to expand the scope of the service coverage so that it could include more sites and landmarks in 2025.

The first phase comprises a selection of sites, including Khor Rori, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Images were captured using virtual Trekkers covering an area of​​approximately 36,000 square kilometres.

The launch of this service underscores Oman’s keenness to support innovation and enhance digital access. This affirms the status of Oman as a tourist destination boasting a broad range of cultural and natural features. It constitutes a key achievement in highlighting Oman’s digital presence and offering the world an opportunity to explore the country’s wonders.
