Muscat: Oman has slipped four places on the Global Innovation Index which was released on Monday at a press conference held at the European headquarters of the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland.
This year, Oman finished at 73, compared to 69 in 2015. Switzerland topped the chart, followed by Sweden, while the United Kingdom came third and the United States fourth.
Among Arab countries, Oman came 7th behind the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Lebanon.
The index showed strength in the Sultanate’s political stability and safety, regulatory environment, cost of redundancy dismissal, ease of paying taxes and graduates in science and engineering.
It also indicated strength in the fields of Information and communication technologies and general infrastructure, while the index indicated weakness in Oman’s national feature film, ICT services exports, number of patents, High-tech imports, and Business sophistication.
The index ranks the innovation performance of 128 countries and economies around the world, based on 82 indicators.
This edition explored the impact of innovation-oriented policies on economic growth and development.
High-income and developing countries alike are seeking innovation-driven growth through different strategies. Some countries are successfully improving their innovation capacity, while others still struggle.
