Muscat: In a significant step towards establishing an integrated industrial waste management system in Oman, the Omani Environmental Services Holding Company "be'ah" has signed a financing agreement with ahli islamic to implement the second phase of its industrial waste treatment facility. This follows the successful completion of the first phase in the Sohar Free Zone.
The OMR 51 million financing will partially fund the development of a specialized hazardous waste treatment plant, the enhancement of physico-chemical treatment technologies, and the establishment of modern facilities for managing used oils and highly toxic waste. It will also support the installation of smart storage tanks and advanced infrastructure to ensure operational efficiency.
The first phase of the project, which has been operational for several years, includes industrial landfills, solid waste storage facilities, a solidification plant, and a specialized laboratory accredited by the Gulf Accreditation Centre – the only facility of its kind in Oman.
Upon completion of all phases, this comprehensive project is expected to contribute significantly to the national economy, support sustainability goals, and advance circular economy principles. It aligns with Oman Vision 2040 by establishing infrastructure that facilitates both heavy and light industrial projects, creates job opportunities, leverages the inherent value of waste resources, and enhances in-country value.
Eng. Abdulkarim bin Qasim Al Balushi, Chief Operating Officer – Hazardous Waste at be’ah, emphasized the critical role of financial institutions in supporting infrastructure projects that bolster economic growth and position Oman among advanced nations. He stated, “This project represents a significant leap in waste management, particularly considering the increasing industrial activities in Oman. It aligns with the national industrial waste management strategy to provide comprehensive and sustainable solutions to waste challenges.”
Mr. Yousuf Al Rawahi, DGM – Head of ahli islamic, commented: “We are proud to support ‘be’ah’ in its mission to develop a sustainable industrial waste management system in Oman. This financing agreement for Phase II of the Sohar Free Zone facility demonstrates our commitment to supporting projects that align with Oman Vision 2040 and contribute to economic growth and environmental sustainability. At ahli islamic, we recognise the importance of partnerships that not only address critical waste management challenges but also help advance the circular economy. This project underscores our dedication to investing in initiatives that promote innovation and uphold the highest environmental standards for a thriving, sustainable future.”
The project adheres to the Basel Convention on the control of transboundary movements of hazardous wastes and their disposal, to which Oman is a signatory. The Sultanate remains committed to the highest international environmental standards to protect and sustain its environment, adopting best practices in line with global changes and requirements.
The integrated facility in Sohar Free Zone, once Phase II is complete, is expected to transform the industrial waste management sector in Oman. It will set new standards for industrial waste treatment services in the Sultanate, meeting the growing needs of the industrial sector while ensuring environmental sustainability.
