Muscat – Oman Sail will welcome 45 schoolchildren from 15 government schools in Muscat, Sur and Mussanah this week for the Renaissance Interschool Regatta at Al Mouj Muscat. Racing in Optimist dinghies, the children are all part of Oman Sail’s Community Sailing Program, sponsored by Renaissance Services, which has introduced 301 boys and girls to the sport and has succeeded in making sailing accessible to more young Omanis.
Abdul Aziz Al Shidi, Oman Sail’s Acting Director Sailing, said, “Oman Sail’s Community Sailing Program, sponsored by Renaissance Services, has been a valuable gateway for introducing schoolchildren to the sport and encourage more young Omanis to participate in sailing. Together with Renaissance Services, the Community Sailing Program and Interschool Regatta provides opportunities for the youth and help keep them engaged in a healthy and active lifestyle, and by investing in our communities we are giving back to the nation and supporting the dreams of the next generation of Omani sailors.”
Oman Sail and Renaissance Services have committed to teach a total of 900 students aged 8-10 from government schools in Al Batinah South, Al Sharqiyah South and Muscat Governates each year through a coordinated approach at Oman Sail’s sailing schools in Al Mouj Muscat, Mussanah and Sur.
Each student will take part in a five-week sailing course with one weekly session using the Optimist boat, as well as take part in a beach clean-up to ensure the local community is kept clean and underline the importance of preserving the environment and keeping the seas clean.
The programme culminates with the Renaissance Services Interschool Regatta where the best performing sailors from the three sailing schools will compete against their peers.
