India said on Wednesday it targeted nine sites in its airstrikes, describing them as "precision strikes at terrorist camps."Pakistan earlier said the strikes hit five locations.
These include three in Pakistan-administered Kashmir and two in Punjab, the country's most populous province, Pakistan said.
Locations struck included near Muridke in Punjab, as well as Bagh, Kotli and Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-controlled Kashmir.
India briefs Trump administration on Pakistan strikes
India's Embassy in Washington said that India's National Security Advisor Ajit Doval had spoken to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and briefed him on the action taken.
"India's actions have been focused and precise," the embassy said in a statement, adding that Rubio, who is also currently the acting US national security advisor, had been briefed "on the actions taken."
The statement began by stating "terrorists killed 26 civilians in Jammu and Kashmir in a brutal and heinous attack."
A former member of India's National Security Advisory Board has described the strikes as "a calibrated response."
Talking to Murali Krishnan, DW's reporter in New Delhi, Amitabh Mattooo said India had struck the strongholds of Jaish e-Mohammed, an Islamist organisation which operates primarily in Kashmir, as well as Lashkar-e Taiba, a Pakistan-based extremist organization which aims to unite Indian administered Kashmir with Pakistan.
Pakistan PM says Indian strikes constitute 'act of war'
Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif described the Indian attack as an "act of war."
"Pakistan has every right to give a robust response," he wrote in Urdu on X.
"The Pakistani nation and the Pakistan Armed Forces know very well how to deal with the enemy," he added.
Pakistan vows response
Pakistan's Defense Minister Khawaja Asif told Geo TV that Pakistan would retaliate against India with "even greater force."
The Pakistan military said missiles hit a mosque in Bahawalpur, a city in Punjab, Pakistan, killing a child and wounding two civilians. The death nor injuries could be independently verified.
India's strikes also targeted the city of Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistan-administered Kashmir, and a small town called Kotli in the same region.
