OHRC discusses implications of Israeli aggression against Qatar

Jeddah: A delegation from the Oman Human Rights Commission(OHRC), headed by Prof. Rashid bin Hamad Al Balushi, Chairman of the Commission, took part in the emergency meeting convened by the Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), at the General Secretariat of the OIC in Jeddah.

The participants discussed the grave human rights and humanitarian implications resulting from the Israeli aggression against the State of Qatar. During the opening session, the Chairman of the Commission delivered a statement underscoring the importance of upholding the principles of justice and peace, and of advancing the implementation of the resolutions of the Arab-Islamic Summit held in September in Qatar, as a practical framework to guide collective action aimed at protecting civilians and safeguarding human dignity.

He further pointed out that the silence of the international community in the face of such violations serves as an encouragement for their continuation and the exacerbation of their consequences.

This, he stressed, calls for effective and coordinated action at the human rights, legal, and diplomatic levels to ensure accountability and prevent impunity, in line with international humanitarian law and relevant conventions.

The Commission's statement also emphasized the importance of strengthening joint efforts among national human rights institutions in OIC member states, and intensifying channels of communication with the relevant United Nations bodies to ensure prompt and sustainable delivery of humanitarian assistance.

It is also called to create the necessary conditions for a ceasefire, alleviate the suffering of those affected, and protect vital facilities and infrastructure.

The meeting featured in-depth discussions on the evolving situation on the ground and its humanitarian repercussions, as well as an assessment of the possible legal and diplomatic measures to support the State of Qatar.

These deliberations aimed at developing a unified human rights position that sets urgent priorities and outlines courses of action in international fora, particularly the Human Rights Council and the Security Council.

The delegation included Minister Plenipotentiary Aqeel bin Alawi Ba Omar, and Abdulaziz bin Ali Al Saadi, Director of the Legal Affairs Department at the Oman Human Rights Commission.
