Muscat: The University Medical City on Monday inaugurated the Central Intravenous Admixture Unit (CIVA) at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital(SQUH).
This step reflects its commitment to raising the standards of pharmaceutical care and patient safety in line with best global practices, and its ability to turn strategic projects into practical reality that enhances the efficiency of the healthcare system.
The unit represents a qualitative leap in pharmaceutical services and is an addition to developing the pharmacy service. Its requirements and outfitting were completed according to the highest international standards during a year of continuous work and effort, allowing it to begin providing its vital services to patients from Monday.
The unit provides a specialised environment for preparing sensitive intravenous medications such as chemotherapy, antibiotics, intravenous nutrition, and other critical solutions that require high precision in preparation.
This is done under the direct supervision of specialised pharmacists and technicians in a sterile preparation environment that ensures the highest levels of safety and quality.
The unit aims to enhance patient safety, ensure dosage accuracy, improve the efficiency of treatment outcomes, alleviate burdens on the nursing staff, and support the hospital in achieving and sustaining international accreditations like the Canadian Healthcare Accreditation.
In addition to its direct role in boosting patient safety and treatment efficiency, the unit represents added investment value by rationalising the consumption of medications and resources and raising the efficiency of health spending, which positively impacts service sustainability.
The unit also serves as an advanced educational platform for qualifying national competencies in clinical pharmacy and sterile medication preparation, in addition to being a supportive environment for scientific and applied research that keeps pace with global developments and contributes to the evolution of healthcare practices.
This launch underscores the University Medical City's keenness to complete its development projects and transform them into tangible achievements that serve the patient and keep pace with global developments.
This achievement also embodies the University Medical City's strategic direction toward strengthening its role in excellence, consistent with the objectives of Oman Vision 2040.
