Geneva: The Sultanate of Oman chaired the 2025 Extraordinary Conference of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union in Geneva, convened alongside the 151st General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union. The high-level gathering addressed critical regional developments with particular focus on the Palestinian situation and Gaza's humanitarian crisis following the recently announced ceasefire agreement.
Khalid bin Hilal Al Ma'awali, Chairman of the Shura Council, led the Omani delegation and delivered the conference's opening address. "We meet at a pivotal moment for our region, where interconnected political, economic and security challenges demand unified Arab responses," Al Ma'awali stated. He emphasised that "regional security remains indivisible" while calling for enhanced parliamentary cooperation mechanisms to address ongoing crises.
The conference concluded with participants adopting a final statement that welcomed the Gaza ceasefire agreement as representing "a victory for dialogue and peace." The statement specifically acknowledged the mediation roles of Egypt and Qatar while endorsing Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi's call for an international reconstruction conference in Cairo this November.
Delegates expressed appreciation for Oman's leadership in steering the conference proceedings, noting the effective organization and substantive outcomes that demonstrated Arab parliamentary commitment to peace initiatives and inter-Arab cooperation. The final declaration affirmed that ongoing parliamentary coordination would continue supporting Arab causes in international forums while promoting regional security and sustainable development objectives.
