Nouakchott: The Sultanate of Oman participated in the fourth session of the Arab Environment Forum, convened in Nouakchott, capital of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania on Wednesday. The forum, organised under the thematic banner "Towards Integrated Environmental Policies Serving Humanity," is conducted in collaboration with the Technical Secretariat of the Council of Arab Ministers Responsible for Environmental Affairs at the Arab League.
The Omani delegation was led by Dr. Abdullah bin Ali Al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority, who contributed to the high-level policy dialogue session titled "A Regional Vision for Coordinating and Integrating Environmental Policies for Humanity" within the forum's official programme.
He emphasised the critical importance of institutional and legislative framework integration for establishing effective environmental governance. He highlighted Oman's comprehensive initiatives in developing environmental legislation designed to ensure coordinated action across developmental sectors while achieving integration among economic, social, and environmental priorities.
He further outlined necessary measures to strengthen legislative coherence at the regional Arab level, facilitating enhanced implementation of both regional and international environmental agreements.
Al Amri detailed Oman's leadership contributions during its presidency of the seventh session of the United Nations Environment Assembly, noting the extensive diplomatic engagement with nations across all global regions and continents. These efforts produced unified perspectives in developing the Ministerial Declaration draft and building consensus around numerous resolutions presented during the Assembly's seventh session proceedings. He urged all Arab states to support alignment between national policy frameworks and global environmental directions while enhancing synergy with regional and international environmental conventions.
The fourth Arab Environment Forum's two-day convening implements the official decision issued by the Council of Arab Ministers Responsible for Environmental Affairs during its thirty-fifth session held in Jeddah in September 2024.
The forum serves as a strategic platform for knowledge exchange and vision development among policy makers, technical experts, civil society representatives, and private sector stakeholders. Its objectives include advancing environmental legislation development and promoting environmental awareness throughout the Arab world. Current session discussions prioritise enhancing environmental policy effectiveness while encouraging innovation and investment in sustainable environmental solutions.
