Muscat: The Ministry of Education today honored the Green Schools for the academic year 2024 / 2025, under the auspices of Majid Said Al Bahri, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Education for Administrative and Financial Affairs.
The ceremony witnessed the honoring of 50 schools from various governorates of the Sultanate of Oman in appreciation of their contributions to achieving the project's goals by implementing programs and activities that promote the concepts of Greening Education related to Goal 4 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Target 7 concerning Education for Sustainable Development.
In a speech on behalf of UNESCO, Julia Hayes, Head of the Education for Sustainable Development Section, praised the Sultanate of Oman's efforts in implementing the Greening Education Partnership initiative emanating from the Transforming Education Summit 2022, stressing that the Sultanate of Oman is considered one of the pioneering countries in this field.
The ceremony included the signing of cooperation programmes with Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), Sohar Aluminium, Shell Oman, and the Omani Environmental Services Holding Company "be'ah”.
These programs aim to support the Ministry's efforts in expanding the scope of the Greening Education initiative and enhancing environmental activities in schools, thus contributing to embedding sustainability practices and promoting environmental awareness among students. This reflects an effective partnership between the public and private sectors to serve the community and the environment.
It is worth noting that the Ministry of Education has successfully aligned the national standard for the Green Schools project with the UNESCO Green Schools Quality Standard, which contributed to the joining of 23 schools from various governorates to the Global Green Schools Network.
The Sultanate of Oman was chosen by UNESCO to be one of the model Arab countries in the field of Greening Education, in pursuit of achieving the indicator aiming to transform 50% of schools into Green Schools by 2030.
The ceremony was attended by Dr. Abdullah Khamis Ambusaidi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Education for Education and Head of the National Team for the Greening Education Partnership Initiative, and a number of Directors General from the Ministry of Education.
