DGSM reviews measurement and calibration lab designation

Muscat: The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion (MoCIIP), represented by the Directorate General for Standards and Metrology (DGSM), in cooperation with the GCC Standardization Organization, hosted today, Tuesday, 20 January 2026, a workshop on the designation of measurement and calibration laboratories. The workshop was attended by relevant stakeholders from industrial, health, service, and regulatory sectors, as part of the MoCIIP’s efforts to strengthen national partnerships and develop the metrology infrastructure in the Sultanate of Oman.

Imad bin Khamis Al Shukaili, Director General of DGSM at the MoCIIP, affirmed that the workshop aims to highlight the responsibilities of Designated Institutes (DIs) and the services they provide in disseminating international units of measurement. He noted that the workshop builds on achievements recorded in 2025, during which 970 devices and instruments were calibrated at the National Calibration Centre. Additionally, over 2,300 scales and liquid fuel pumps were verified, generating total revenues of RO 16,500.

Al Shukaili explained that the workshop represents a qualitative step in developing national technical capabilities and optimising available resources in support of economic development goals. These efforts contribute to enhancing the competitiveness of Oman’s products and services in regional and international markets, while protecting consumers and ensuring the accuracy of measurements in accordance with the highest global standards. This, in turn, strengthens international confidence in the national metrology infrastructure and reinforces Oman’s position as an active partner within the global metrology system.

The workshop discussed governance and mechanisms for designating measurement and calibration laboratories within the framework of international mutual recognition (CIPM MRA), enabling the Sultanate of Oman to play an effective role in the global metrology community and to consolidate its standing as a leading country in this vital field.

The workshop forms part of the implementation of the Law on Measurement and Calibration No. (17/2013), and the activation of the role of the National Calibration Centre under the DGSM in completing the International System of Units (SI). This supports the establishment of a reliable, internationally recognised national metrology infrastructure and reinforces the MoCIIP’s efforts to entrench the concepts of measurement and calibration, and to deliver highly reliable measurement services across various sectors. These efforts positively impact international confidence in national measurements and enhance the competitiveness of Oman’s products and services in regional and global markets.
