Explosion seen in Tehran near al-Quds day rally, state TV says

Iranian state television said a large explosion took place in a Tehran square where people had gathered for a rally making al-Quds Day.

Al-Quds Day is a historic Arabic name for Jerusalem, and marches take place annually on the last Friday of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

Iran says the day is an occasion to express support for the Palestinians and emphasize the importance of Jerusalem for Muslims.

Iran does not recognize Israel and has marked Quds day since the start of its 1979 Islamic revolution.

Eyewitnesses said the crowd was smaller than in previous years, with two factors playing a role: many people having left Tehran after the war's outbreak, and fears about drone attacks during demonstrations.
