Muscat: Oman’s Environment Authority has issued an official statement following social media reports of an Arabian caracal sighting in the Wilayat of Al Mudhaibi.
The animal was reportedly seen in the village of Samad Al Shan. Authorities confirmed that the Arabian caracal is an endangered species and is fully protected under Oman’s wildlife conservation laws.
Officials explained that the caracal is naturally solitary and shy, posing no threat to humans or property. It mainly feeds on small animals such as rodents and wild rabbits.
The sighting has been described as a positive environmental indicator, reflecting a healthy and balanced ecosystem, as well as the Sultanate’s ongoing efforts to preserve biodiversity and natural habitats.
The authority urged residents not to approach, harm, or attempt to capture the animal, and to report any sightings via official channels or the environmental hotline (1991).
“Community cooperation is essential in safeguarding our natural heritage,” the statement added.
