Oman reaffirms support for global food security, freedom of maritime navigation

Muscat:  The Sultanate of Oman participated today in a ministerial meeting held via video-conferencing, jointly organized by the Italian Republic and the Republic of Croatia, to discuss several international issues related to food security and international cooperation.

The meeting saw the participation of several foreign ministers from the GCC and the European Union, alongside foreign ministers from the Arab League and a number of international and regional partners. The Sultanate of Oman was represented at the meeting by Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi, Foreign Minister.

In his meeting, the Foreign Minister emphasized the importance of reaching a complete end to the war and the final and total lifting of the existing blockade. He noted that such steps would create the necessary conditions to address humanitarian and economic repercussions, bolster international efforts aimed at achieving food security, and ensure the smooth flow of essential supplies and the stability of global supply chains.

He reaffirmed the Sultanate of Oman’s approach of supporting international cooperation and constructive dialogue, underlining its keenness to contribute to initiatives that enhance stability and sustainable development while serving the interests of the peoples of the region and the world. He further stressed that the Sultanate of Oman has taken an active role during crises in supporting safe access to food supplies and fertilizers, and in contributing to ensuring the safe passage of ships and the continuity of maritime navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

The meeting discussed a new political initiative aimed at supporting food security and facilitating access to fertilizers, with the participation of representatives from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the United Nations, the GCC, and the European Union.

This initiative comes within the framework of strengthening international cooperation to face challenges associated with global food security. Participants emphasized the importance of coordinating international and regional efforts to enhance the stability of food supply chains and ensure the sustainable provision of essential materials and resources, thereby contributing to mitigating the repercussions of global crises on food security and sustainable development.
