Oman students make progress in science, math

Muscat: The Sultanate has made a remarkable achievement in the international study student's acquisition of math and science compared with the previous participations.
This was declared at the meeting of the Ministry of Education held in Al Watiyah to present the outcomes of the application for the international study in science in 2015.
The International Society for Assessment of Education Acquisition, which supervises the international study in math and sciences has approved the outcomes of the main application of the international study in science and math. Thanks to the efforts made by all the relevant organisations involved in the study, the Sultanate made a remarkable improvement in students' acquisition of science and math. It also made remarkable improvement on the international, Arab and Gulf levels.
Dr. Madiha bint Ahmed Al Shibaniyah, Minister of Education delivered a speech where she said that the great care accorded by His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said and infinite support to the education march in the Sultanate over the past decades have played a great role in promoting the different aspects of the educational work.
She added that the Ministry is keen on taking part in the international studies as it believes in the importance of relying on international indicators on students' acquisition, comparing the Sultanate's students' acquisition with the international standards and benefiting from the outcomes of such studies in taking necessary measure to improve the quality of the education process.
The sample of the Sultanate included 254 schools from the different governorates for grade 4 , 255 schools for grade in addition to 25 private schools for grade four, 27 schools for grade 8, 21 international schools for grade 4 and 19 schools for grade 8. The total classes of grade 4 and grade 8 stood at 601.
The main aim of the study is to compare the acquisition of the students in science and math at different education, cultural, economic and social backgrounds. The reference terms of the study have been developed in collaboration with education, education assessment and curricula experts, as well as national coordinators for the countries taking part.
