Oman tourism: Fancy tackling Mt Kilimanjaro?

Muscat: Outward Bound Oman is looking for a hardy crew of volunteers to scale the peaks of Mt Kilimanjaro this summer.
After successful expeditions to Mt Damavand and Mt Kenya, Outward Bound Oman is now inviting applications from people in Oman wishing to test themselves on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania this July.
As part of its remit to challenge and develop the human potential of the nation, each year Outward Bound Oman organises an overseas journey that enables people to challenge themselves, and take a life changing step out of their comfort zones.
At 5,895m, Kilimanjaro is not only Africa’s highest mountain but also the planet’s highest free-standing peak.
Described as the ‘Everyman’s Everest’, Kilimanjaro is the most achievable of the world’s top seven summits. It is not a technically difficult mountain to scale, so with the right support team, preparation and equipment, it is within the reach of ordinary people who wish to push the boundaries of their capabilities.
People interested in joining the team should contact Salwa Al Balushi at Outward Bound Oman on 24539788, or [email protected] for more information before the end of March.
Outward Bound Oman’s choice of Mt Kilimanjaro is in part due to Oman’s close historical ties with Tanzania. The Omani flag flying at the mountain summit will hopefully inspire other Omanis to explore their close neighbour, and further cement the long standing ties between the two countries.
One of Outward Bound Oman’s instructors, Mohammed Al Touqi, reached the summit of Kilimanjaro in 2015. Reflecting on that expedition, where 95% of people successfully reached the summit, Mohammed said: “In line with the core philosophy of Outward Bound, people on that journey all discovered that when they really pushed themselves, and dug deep, they were capable of achieving far more than they realised - our expedition to Kili this year provides another exciting opportunity for others to do the same”.
