Muscat: Samples of the melamine plastic tableware were taken at the local market by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI) to test them and ensure that they are safe for use and free of the harmful formaldehyde substance.
Eng. Sami bin Salim Al Sahib, Acting Director General of the Directorate General for Standards and Metrology at the MoCI said that the tests found that some products contain the harmful formaldehyde substance.
He added that the Ministry has maintained coordination with the Directorate General of Customs at the Royal Oman Police (ROP) to ban the entry of any consignments of such materials unless they are free of the harmful formaldehyde substance and that they are fit for use.
Samples of such consignment should be sent to the Directorate General for Standards and Metrology for testing till the standards for such products are developed.
