Muscat: Rustaq recorded a temperature of 49.6 degrees Celsius on June 9, one of the highest in the world, according to a number of leading weather websites.
Oman’s meteorology department confirmed the figures online, as it declared the highest and lowest temperatures recorded yesterday.
In addition to Rustaq, three other areas in the Sultanate were among the list of the top 10 hottest places worldwide.
Al Amerat was fifth at 48.9 degrees Celsius, Fahud sixth at 48.6 degrees Celsius, while Adam airport was ninth at 48.4 degrees Celsius.
Sources also revealed that Kuwait was the second hottest place in the world, at 49.4 degrees Celsius, followed by Iraq at 49.2, and Pakistan at 49.
According to the meteorology department forecast for the next 24 hours, there will be clear to partly cloudy skies along the coastal areas of the Dhofar governorate. The rest of the Sultanate will see chances of intermittent drizzle, and mainly clear skies, with the possibility of convective cloud development, isolated rain and thundershowers over the Hajar Mountains and their surrounding area, associated with strong downdraft wind towards the afternoon.
Dust can also be expected over the open areas of the governorates of Al Buraimi, Al Dhahirah, and Al Dakhiliyah due to strong northwesterly wind.
“Along the coastal area of the Sea of Oman, wind will be northeasterly to light to moderate during the day, and become southwesterly light at night, while along the coastal area of the Arabian Sea, wind will be southwesterly moderate to fresh, and over the rest of Oman, wind will be northwesterly to westerly moderate to fresh,” the report stated.
