Muscat: Indian national hockey goalkeeper Sreejesh P.R. made his 200th appearance for his country when his team beat Pakistan 3-1 at the Asian Champions Trophy in Muscat.
The two arch-rivals played each other at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex on Saturday evening, with Sreejesh making a number of crucial saves. The only goal he conceded came from a rebound in the first quarter.
Sreejesh first made his debut for India 12 years ago in 2006, and said that to him, the milestone he’d reached was doubly important.
“The journey has been delightful since I made my debut back in 2006 and at the 12th year,” he announced. “I am at ‘200’ today, and I am double proud as a goal keeper b coz for us 200=400.., half of our career, we sit in the bench waiting for our chance.”
In typically modest fashion, though, Sreejesh was quick to give praise to the team as a whole after India came from behind to beat Pakistan in that game.
“Definitely, it is a memorable moment, it’s not about whom you play against,” he said in a video released by Hockey India. “We just won today, so I think that is the best give gift I can receive from my team, so it is a great memory and a great match. We needed to adjust with a lot of things here in Oman, so definitely, the players are getting used to this ground.
“Even during the last match, we started a bit low, but we bounced back really well in the second and third quarter, and by the fourth quarter, we controlled the game, so for the next upcoming matches, we need to do that from the first minute itself so we don’t give an opportunity for an opponent to control the game,” added Sreejesh.
