Number of Omanis in private sector jobs declines

Muscat: Number of Omani nationals working in the private sector registered a marginal 0.3 per cent drop in March 2016 compared with figures for February, according to the latest bulletin published by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI).
As of March, Omanis employed in the private sector stood at 209,608, as against 210,272 in the previous month.
Significantly, the report shows that as of March, less than a quarter of the total Omanis working in the private sector were females whose numbers stood at 50,817.
A great majority of them drew a salary of OMR325 to OMR400, with their numbers standing at 63,881 in March and logging a 1.9 per cent drop compared with February figures. In contrast, as many as 7,767 Omanis in the private sector were entitled to a hefty salary of over OMR2,000, but their numbers declined 0.1 per cent over the period.
The fall in Omani workers was prominent in the Governorate of North Al Batinah at 0.8 per cent, with numbers dipping to 38,703 in March from 39,006 logged in February. However, Al Wusta recorded a 1.3 per cent rise — the highest rate of increase among the governorates — in the number of Omanis working in private firms, taking the number to 1,444 in March.
Dhofar registered a 0.5 per cent rise in Omani workers at 13,134, while Musandam saw numbers falling 0.1 per cent to 1,152. In Al Buraimi, Omanis employed with the private sector declined 0.2 per cent to 3,665.
The governorates of Al Dakhliyah and Al Dhahirah posted a 0.3 per cent decrease in the number of Omani workers, which fell to 24,610 and 9,379 respectively in March as against February.
South Al Sharqiyah
The Governorate of South Al Sharqiyah recorded a 0.8 per cent increase in Omani employees in the private sector at 12,827, whereas the numbers fell 0.6 per cent in South Al Batinah at 19,980.
Meanwhile, the number of Omani employees remained more or less the same in North Al Sharqiyah with numbers hovering over 12,960-plus.
Omanis with a salary in the range of OMR400 to 500 posted a decrease of 1.2 per cent to 48,095, even as those earning OMR500 to OMR600 increased by the same percentage to touch 21,949. Those drawing a salary of OMR600 to OMR700 rose 0.6 per cent to 15,428, while the increase was 1.5 per cent among those salaried OMR700to OMR800.
Nationals employed with the private sector with a salary of OMR800 to OMR900 and OMR900 to OMR1,000 registered a rise of 0.6 per cent and 1.6 per cent to reach 6,935 and 5,386 respectively over the period. Staff salaried OMR1,000 to OMR2,000 on the other hand posted a marginal increase of 0.1 per cent to 19,640, the report says.
