UN condemns shelling of field hospital in Libya

Tunis: The UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Libya Berangere Boell-Yousfi condemned the recent deadly shelling of a field hospital in the south of the capital Tripoli.

"Berangere Boell-Yousfi expresses her strong condemnation of the disgraceful shelling on Al-Alamain school and Az Zawiyah Field Hospital in Airport road area, south of Tripoli, depriving thousands of people from accessing basic services," the UN Support Mission in Libya said in a statement.

Four doctors and one paramedic were killed and eight medical personnel were wounded in the incident.

"Since the beginning of the conflict in April, a total of 37 attacks have been registered on health personnel and facilities, resulting in a total of 11 deaths, 33 injuries and 19 ambulances directly or indirectly impacted," the statement added.

The statement called on all Libyan rival parties to "respect their obligations under the International Humanitarian Law and to end the attack of hospitals, schools and other civilian infrastructure and personnel."

According to the Ministry of Health, five medical workers were killed and eight others injured when the shelling hit a field hospital in southern Tripoli on Saturday.

The east-based army has been leading a military campaign since early April to take over Tripoli from the government.

The fighting so far has killed more than 1,000 people, injured more than 5,700 others, and forced over 120,000 to flee their homes, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
