Muscat: How to provide better skills and impart more knowledge to young pharmacists in Oman, will be among the key topics discussed at the upcoming Oman Pharmaceutical Conference, which will be held on 3 and 4 December 2019.
The conference is scheduled to be held at the National University of Science and Technology, and the theme for the conference will be ‘empowering pharmacists in healthcare and medication safety’.
The Oman Pharmaceutical Conference 2019 aims at developing the knowledge and skills of young pharmacy students, research scholars, academicians, practising clinical and community pharmacists, scientists, policy makers, industrial pharmacists, researchers and other health care professionals, and empowering pharmacists in healthcare and medication safety.
There will be spectrum of plenary sessions, symposia, workshops and poster presentations on topics related to the practice of pharmacy, drug discovery and pharmaceutical sciences.
The conference aims to achieve quality and effectiveness in the management of professions that contribute in the promotion of safe use of medicine and medication safety among healthcare professionals.
Proferssor Simon Jones, vice chancellor of the university, projected the importance of such international conferences in the pharmacy sectors and looked forward to active participation of pharmacists for hospital, community pharmacies and industries, in addition to students, researchers and pharma regulators.
Dr Salim Al Arami, deputy vice chancellor and provost of the University, said, “It is a nice platform for professionals and researchers to share knowledge and skills for better patient safety. The university is committed for community outreach and engagement through such conferences. I welcome health professionals from the government and private sectors to join the scientific deliberations.
Dr Jayasekhar P Nair, head of the Pharmacy programme of the university and general convener of the conference added, “It is aimed at strengthening the network among health professionals. About 350 delegates are expected to attend the conference and about 50 scientific papers from researchers and students will be presented. The best posters in various categories will be awarded.
“The conference has six plenary sessions and symposia on patient safety, pharmacovigilance and clinical pharmacy practice,” he added. “A pharma exhibition is being arranged, where the pharmacy industries, distributors, hospitals and labs etc. can exhibit their products and services.”
The conference has been accredited by the Oman Medical Specialty Board (OMSB), and among the highlights will be an address by Dr S Suresh Madhavan, dean, System College of Pharmacy, at the University of North Texas’ Health Science Center.
Two clinical pharmacy experts will speak at the event - Dr Thamir M Alshammari from the King Saud University in Riyadh and Anwar A Almuslim the Director of Medical Safety from the Ministry of Health in Saudi Arabia. In addition tp them, Dr Sathvik B Sridhar, professor of Clinical Pharmacy at the Ras Al Khaimah Medical and Health Science University and Dr M Ramesh of the JSS academy of Higher Education and Research will speak in the session on pharmacovigilance.
Husain Al Ramimmy, director of Pharmacovigilance at the Omani Ministry of Health, will outline the past, present and the future of the Oman pharmacovigilance scenario, among other presentations fielded at the pharmaceutical conference this December.
