Muscat: The Supreme Council for Planning (SCP) held its second meeting for 2020 under the chairmanship of Dr. Ali bin Masood bin Ali Al Sunaidi, Minister of Commerce and Industry and Deputy Chairman of SCP.
The meeting discussed ways to address the expected effects on the Omani economy as a result of the spread of the coronavirus pandemic and the measures taken by the Supreme Committee entrusted with undertaking measures to tackle developments resulting from COVID-19 pandemic to reduce the effects of the pandemic on private sector enterprises and entrepreneurship.
SCP appreciated the royal directives to form a subcommittee from the Supreme Committee entrusted with undertaking measures to tackle developments resulting from COVID-19 pandemic to handle the economic effects of the coronavirus pandemic.
SCP discussed the implications of financing the development budget due to the sharp decline in oil prices during the past months and ways of dealing with them. The measures may include rescheduling the implementation of projects according to priority, and tendering some projects that can be implemented in partnership with the private sector.
SCP reviewed also the provisional features of the draft tenth five-year plan (2021-2025) and the measures taken by the working team formed with various governmental and private institutions.
It also touched on the main pillars of the plan and the programs that will be included in this plan being the first stage of Oman Vision 2040, taking into consideration the conditions and challenges currently facing the regional economies including the Sultanate.
It also reviewed the international reports regarding the expected recovery indicators during the years 2020-2021. SCP appreciated the efforts made by those involved in the development of this plan. SCP reviewed the executive position of the draft national development strategy and its outputs, the proposed alternatives for spatial development at the level of each governorate.
SCP reviewed the report of the executive stages of the strategic projects, the major development projects, and the economic diversification projects as well as the performance of the national strategies and programs. The meeting also discussed a number of other issues listed on the agenda of the meeting and took appropriate decisions towards them.
