Royal Hospital succeeds in removal of rare tumour

Muscat: The Royal Hospital has succeeded in removing a large-sized and rare tumour from a patient in the Sultanate.

A statement issued online by the Royal Hospital said, ”An Omani medical team managed to remove a rare tumour from a patient. The patient was diagnosed with a giant tumour, where he refused to perform the operation in or outside the Sultanate because of the risk of his life, to return after weeks in a critical condition as a result of a bowel explosion in his stomach.”

The statement confirmed, ”The tumour was completely removed with many parts of the bowel of the abdomen, including the right colon, parts of the small intestine, and part of the right ureter, after which the affected parts of the abdomen were repaired and fixed.”

“The operation was performed by a surgical team from the Royal Hospital, which included: Dr. Rashid Al Alawi, Dr. Salem Al Rahbi, and Dr. Khawla Al Harasiyah, in cooperation with the staff of anaesthesia and nursing,” the statement added.

The statement explained that "This tumour is one of the rare tumours registered worldwide. It is reported that the patient was allowed to be discharged from the hospital after completing the treatment plan without any complications, with his ability to carry out normal life activities.”

“After three years of follow-up and examinations, it was found that the patient's body was free of the tumour and that he enjoyed full health,” the statement said.
