Muscat: More female students than males are pursuing higher education in Oman, according to the latest data, and more students are opting for private tuition over government run colleges.
The Statistics Department at the Admission Centre reported that for the academic year 2014/15, 57.7 percent of all students in higher education were female.
During the same academic year, private higher education institutions in the Sultanate hosted more students compared to the government higher education institutions.
The number of students in the private institutions was 68,350 students, or 51.9 per cent, compared to 63,410 students in the government institutions.
The number of students who received a bachelor’s degree for the same year, 2014/15, was the highest ever for the Sultanate, with 83.2 per cent of all students for that year receiving the award.
Around 14 percent of all students received a diploma, while just 2.6 percent achieved a master’s degree and an even smaller slice of students, 0.1 percent of the total, were awarded a coveted PHD award.
