Muscat: School and university students took part in a sustainability programme organised by the Nama Group and were awarded for their projects and innovation at an award ceremony yesterday.
Dubbed as Nama Ambassadors, more than 40 college and 220 school students took part in the six-month programme, where they were trained in various aspects of sustainable development, such as social, economical and environmental, and how to implement their projects for benefit of nation.
In the higher education category, Maryam Al Amri from Sohar University won the first prize for her brick recycling and manufacturing project, while Fatima Al Jardani was the runner up for her project involving the unification of three renewable energy sources. Khadija Al Balushi came in third for her desalination by solar power project.
The Hafsa bint Omar School from the Ad-Dakhiliya Governorate claimed first prize and was followed by the Fatima bint Asad School, while Al Fadel bin Abbas came in third. The winners were awarded cash prizes worth OMR5,000.
The event was held under the patronage of Dr. Hamood Al Harthi, undersecretary of the Ministry of Education for Education and Curriculum. He said, “The projects were created with a long-term vision to be implemented by the appropriate companies. Of course the main idea is to save electricity and water consumption, as well as find a solution for environmental sustainability.”
Asked about updating the curriculum to better suit the modern era, he said, “Our curriculum has been updated with compliments to the evolution of talent in the 21st century, with innovation being among them. It also focuses on mathematics, science and engineering in general as the basis of innovation.”
