Female students of SQU win award

Muscat: Female students of the College of Engineering at Sultan Qaboos University have won the silver award in the competition "Designing the Best Mobile Application to Empower Rural Women in the Arab Region", launched by the Arab Women Organization in cooperation with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

According to Sultan Qaboos University (SQU): "The winning project is called Shatla. The application is about providing assistance to rural women to follow the crops they farm in an easy and innovative way, and it provides some features to facilitate work on the farm, and this application also has the advantage of the phonetic feature to support rural women who are unable to read."

The project team includes Maryam AlNuaimi, Mira Al Azani, and Inas Shadoul, students at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the college of Engineering at SQU.

"The competition seeks to improve the lives of rural women in the Arab region and encourage innovative solutions that would empower rural women by using mobile applications to facilitate their access to services and enhance their access to local markets through easy and simple procedures and high efficiency and support the ability of rural women to deal with natural disasters. Floods, torrents, climate change, and epidemics such as the Corona Covid 19 epidemic, as well as problems such as domestic violence, harassment and forced marriage of minors. "
