Oman launches 2025-2026 Archaeological Season to document thousands of years of history

Muscat: The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism has announced the launch of the 2025–2026 archaeological missions season, as part of its ongoing efforts to preserve Oman's heritage, document historical evidence spanning thousands of years, and strengthen the Sultanate’s position as a regional research hub in the field of archaeological studies.

This season includes a range of projects such as archaeological surveys, excavations, laboratory analytical studies, and 3D documentation, in addition to field training programs aimed at enhancing the skills of national cadres.

As part of this season’s activities, an Italian scientific mission from Sapienza University has commenced work at archaeological sites in the Wilayats of Nakhal and Wadi Al-Maawil. The team has been excavating sites dating back to the third and first millennia BCE and conducting archaeological surveys, which have so far led to the documentation of over 77 archaeological features. These findings highlight the historical significance of the discovered sites and indicate continued human activity in the region during the Bronze and Iron Ages.

At the conclusion of the mission’s work this season, an exhibition is scheduled to be held to showcase the discovered artifacts and raise awareness about their importance, contributing to the promotion of Omani heritage and its rich historical legacy.
