Nairobi: The High-Level Segment of the 7th Session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7) commenced on Thursday in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi.
The segment is themed "Advancing Sustainable Solutions for a Resilient Planet". The session is chaired by Dr. Abdullah bin Ali Al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority and President of UNEA-7.
In his speech, Al Amri stated that the session is being held within the framework of the leadership role that the Sultanate of Oman has undertaken since assuming the Assembly's presidency. He noted that Oman has worked to communicate with all countries globally to ensure the inclusivity and ambition of the outcomes of this session, stressing that environmental stability is the foundation of peace, prosperity, and social cohesion, and that protecting nature is protecting security and opportunities for growth.
He clarified that the main goal of the 7th Session is not to describe environmental challenges, but rather to accelerate the implementation of solutions, asserting that the world needs political will translated into coordinated and effective action.
During the session, the Assembly President presented a set of priorities, most notably: enhancing environmental resilience in natural, food, water, and urban systems; achieving coherence among international environmental agreements within a modernized and more coordinated governance framework; and engaging all partners.
He also showcased the Omani experience in achieving balance between humans and nature through a long history of sustainable resource management. He pointed out that these deep roots in environmental awareness enable Oman to lead the Assembly’s efforts toward a more sustainable future.
In conclusion, Al Amri called for the adoption of a strong ministerial declaration that reflects the unity of the international community and embodies the transition from fragmented efforts to integrated action.
The session witnessed broad international attendance, as the UN Environment Assembly is a UN platform that brings together environmental leaders and decision-makers with the aim of formulating decisive resolutions that enhance international cooperation and support global environmental governance efforts.
It is noteworthy that the UN Environment Assembly is the highest global environmental authority within the UN system, with participation from heads of state and government, environment ministers, and a large number of representatives from international organizations, the private sector, and civil society.
