Oman experiences drop in temperatures below -2°C

MUSCAT: Several parts of the Sultanate witnessed a sharp drop in temperatures as winter conditions intensified, with mercury levels falling below freezing in the past 24 hours.

According to data released by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), Jebel Shams recorded the lowest temperature in the country at –2.1°C on Thursday, January 22, 2026 — marking one of the coldest readings of the season.

Other regions also experienced notably low temperatures, particularly in interior and elevated areas. Saiq recorded 6.3°C, while As Sunainah saw temperatures drop to 9.9°C. Yanqul registered 10.2°C, followed by Buraimi (10.5°C) and Mahdha (10.7°C).

In Al Dhahirah Governorate, temperatures dipped to 11.0°C in Dhank, while Ibri and Hamra Al Drooa recorded 12.1°C each. Fahud registered 12.5°C, and Bahla reported 12.6°C.

The CAA stated that all readings were taken from its official meteorological stations across the Sultanate. Authorities have advised residents, especially in mountainous areas, to take necessary precautions as cold conditions are expected to continue during early morning and night hours.

Meteorologists attributed the temperature drop to the influence of cold air masses affecting the region, a common phenomenon during the winter season.
