Royal Hospital conducts over 14,000 surgeries, adopts robotics and remote surgery technologies in 2025

Muscat: The Royal Hospital reinforced its position as a national reference institution through key operational figures. During the past year, it performed 14,446 surgical procedures, received over 213,000 outpatients, handled 55,611 emergency cases, in addition to receiving 72,122 referred cases from various health institutions, practically embodying the integration of the healthcare system across the Sultanate of Oman.

Dr. Amed Khamis Al Araimi, Director General of the Royal Hospital, affirmed to Oman News Agency (ONA) that the hospital embodied an advanced model in providing specialized healthcare throughout 2025, emphasizing its role as a national reference institution steadily progressing towards achieving goals of health sustainability, innovation, and service quality, in alignment with national approaches and Oman Vision 2040.

He added that in diagnostic services, as many as 82,004 radiological examinations were performed, including 1,316 cases referred from other health institutions, alongside conducting 4,437,964 laboratory tests, which included 224,621 samples referred from outside the hospital, bolstering the hospital's standing as a national support center for accurate diagnosis. Endoscopy services saw 7,621 procedures performed, in addition to 17,580 day-case procedures, contributing to expedited service and improved patient experience.

He noted that the hospital maintained its pioneering performance in the field of organ transplants by conducting 52 transplant operations, including 32 kidney transplants and 20 liver transplants, within an integrated medical system adhering to the highest international standards.

He stated that the past year witnessed a series of unprecedented qualitative achievements, most notably performing the first endoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, the first separation of conjoined twins, the first human heart transplant and the first artificial heart implant, in addition to live-streaming an aortic valve transplant procedure during the GIS Valve conference in Dubai. The first service using locally produced 18F-PSMA molecular imaging was also launched, and Thermaltake technology was introduced for the first time in the Sultanate of Oman to treat endometriosis without traditional surgery, alongside performing the first implantation of a wireless, catheter-based dual-chamber pacemaker, he added.

He clarified that the Royal Hospital succeeded in localizing molecular testing for colorectal cancer (KRAS, NRAS, BRAF), as part of the efforts of the Medical Laboratories Department and the Histopathology and Cytology Unit, to be performed for the first time inside the Sultanate of Oman after previously being conducted externally with a wait time exceeding three weeks.

He reported that the hospital recorded notable humanitarian and medical achievements, including the removal of a rare and malignant cancerous tumor from the liver of a three-year-old child, performing the region's first remote surgery (Telesurgery) between Muscat and Kuwait, in addition to introducing the surgical robot and enhancing advanced surgeries.

At the institutional integration level, the Director General of the Royal Hospital reported that the hospital performed 429 surgeries as part of a joint campaign with the Medical City of the Security and Military Services. It also contributed to training medical staff and performing surgeries in several hospitals across the Sultanate of Oman, including Khasab, Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, Sur, Jalan Bani Bu Hassan, Ibra, and A’Rustaq, in addition to launching campaigns to reduce pediatric surgery waiting lists, targeting 1,000 cases and contributing to a 30 percent reduction in waiting lists.

He further noted that in terms of quality and accreditation, the hospital achieved the highest quality standards in nuclear medicine from the International Atomic Energy Agency, completed the localization of HLA testing as one of the essential tests for organ transplants, received international recognition as a reference center for managing food allergies, in addition to winning an Excellence Award at the IHF World Hospital Congress – Geneva 2025.

The hospital also published 154 research papers in internationally peer-reviewed journals, and enhanced its digital transformation by achieving a 100 percent complete transition to digital systems for patient transfer requests, and activating WhatsApp services for the hospital residences, which contributed to a 90 percent increase in communication efficiency, and improved the digital patient experience through medication tracking systems, smart waiting, and electronic prescriptions.

Dr. Amed bin Khamis Al Araimi, Director General of the Royal Hospital, affirmed that the hospital continues to solidify its position as a leading national institution, combining clinical excellence, innovation, capacity building, and improved patient experience, in a journey that translates the investment in human capital and writes new chapters of achievement in the name of the nation.

He added that the accomplishments of 2025 represent a true reflection of the hospital's vision and mission to provide integrated specialized care, based on quality, governance, and innovation, placing the patient at the heart of the service system.
