
Sur: The South Al Sharqiyah Governorate is witnessing accelerated development under the leadership of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, as part of the goals of Oman Vision 2040 to achieve balanced growth and enhance regional competitiveness.
The governorate benefits from strong economic, investment, and tourism potential, supported by integrated infrastructure, logistics networks, and rich cultural heritage. Its coastline—stretching from Tiwi to Masirah Island—offers abundant marine resources and investment opportunities in fish farming, including projects in Qurun and Khuwaimah valued at OMR41 million, producing over 5,300 tonnes.
Key industrial assets include Oman LNG and Oman India Fertilizer Company, alongside logistics hubs, modern ports such as Sur Port, and advanced transport and communication networks supporting exports and supply chains.
Tourism continues to thrive, with attractions like Al-Ashkharah and Ras Al-Jinz beaches, nature reserves including Al-Salil Nature Reserve and Jabal Qahwan, and heritage landmarks such as Qalhat. Popular destinations like Wadi Shab and Wadi Tiwi attract visitors year-round for eco-tourism and adventure activities.
Covering about 12,039 square kilometres, the governorate has a population of 375,853, with Sur as the most populous wilayat.
Institutional performance has improved notably, with public satisfaction in government services rising to 7.2 in 2024, while satisfaction with basic services reached 6.6 in 2025.
Digital transformation indicators also show progress, with digital proficiency reaching 81% in 2025 and cybersecurity readiness at 86% in 2024, reflecting enhanced government efficiency.
Between 2023 and 2025, 27 development projects worth OMR39.8 million were implemented, including waterfronts, parks, road improvements, drainage systems, and public markets.
Additionally, 41 projects funded by the private sector—worth OMR4.6 million—supported community infrastructure such as parks, cultural centers, and recreational facilities.
The governorate continues to advance its development agenda, focusing on economic diversification, sustainable resource use, and improving quality of life, contributing to Oman’s broader national growth objectives.
