Muscat: The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology has officially opened Al Mughsail Road and Bridge to traffic in the Wilayat of Salalah as part of its efforts to enhance the efficiency of Dhofar Governorate's road network and facilitate travel between wilayats and tourist destinations, particularly during the Khareef Dhofar season.
The opening ceremony was held under the patronage of Sayyid Marwan bin Turki Al Said, Governor of Dhofar, who said the governorate is witnessing the implementation of continuous infrastructure projects that align with Oman’s comprehensive development agenda and enhance the quality of services provided to citizens, residents and visitors.
He noted that Al Mughsail Road and Bridge is one of the governorate's vital infrastructure projects, contributing to improved road network efficiency, smoother traffic flow, and easier access to the Wilayats of Rakhyut and Dhalkut, as well as key tourist attractions, thereby supporting tourism, economic activity and social development.
Meanwhile, Eng. Khamis bin Mohammed Al Shamakhi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology for Transport, said the opening of the road and bridge marks the completion of the first phase of the project, while the remaining works—including landscaping, aesthetic features and several structural and service-related elements—are expected to be completed during the first quarter of next year.
He explained that the project includes the construction of a 540-metre-long concrete bridge, supported by 17 piers and two abutments, with a height of 12 metres. It also features an underpass to facilitate traffic movement to nearby tourist attractions, including the Al Mughsail beachfront and the Marneef Cave (natural blowholes).
The undersecretary added that the project also includes the construction of roadside parking areas and a pedestrian walkway, equipped with lighting and ranging in width from 2 to 7 metres. In addition, the project has been fitted with comprehensive road safety features, including concrete and metal barriers, directional signage and warning road markings, in accordance with the standards set out in the Oman Road Design Manual.
