Muscat: The Environment Authority was able to record a number of bird biodiversity sightings on the shores of Khor Al-Har in the Wilayat of Masirah, South Sharqiyah Governorate. This was part of its ongoing field monitoring and follow-up work carried out by specialists and observers in coastal sites and wetlands, reflecting the environmental importance of these locations as vital natural habitats for many bird species.
The recorded sightings included the Red-winged Lapwing, the Glossy Ibis, the Wood Sandpiper, and the Common Snipe. These birds were observed in various locations along Khor Al-Har, particularly in areas where mangrove trees are present. Mangroves are an important ecological component of coastal ecosystems and wetlands, providing suitable environments for many wildlife.
Ghassan bin Hamad Al-Farsi, supervisor of the Environmental Monitoring Unit at the Environment Center in Masirah, stated that the monitoring and recording activities carried out by observers in Khor Al-Har are part of the periodic biodiversity monitoring program.
He noted that recording and documenting bird sightings at their locations contributes to providing continuous field data that helps in monitoring species and natural habitats.
Al-Farsi added that the observers' efforts include field monitoring of sites and documentation of biodiversity, which contributes to enhancing knowledge of existing species and their distribution, and supports efforts to protect and sustainably manage natural habitats.
He pointed out that field monitoring is a crucial aspect of the Authority's efforts to achieve a number of environmental indicators related to operational objectives. This is accomplished by providing up-to-date data and information on biodiversity, wildlife species, and their distribution, which supports the process of assessing the environmental situation and taking appropriate measures to preserve it.
Environment Authority monitors continue to conduct regular monitoring activities at various environmentally important sites in Masirah Island, tracking wildlife, recording observations, and documenting them. This enhances the biodiversity database and contributes to monitoring any changes that may occur in ecosystems.
These efforts are part of the Environment Authority's commitment to conserving wetlands and coastal habitats, preserving their natural components, and strengthening monitoring, protection, and documentation programs. This contributes to the sustainability of biodiversity and natural resources in the Sultanate of Oman and preserves the environmental value of natural sites for future generations.
