Muscat: Oman is strengthening its pharmaceutical manufacturing capabilities through three major industrial projects in Sohar, North Al Batinah Governorate, aimed at producing active pharmaceutical ingredients and raw materials for antibiotics, enhancing drug security and expanding non-oil exports.
The projects – Al Wajer Pharmaceutical Industries, Drug Manufacturing Company (DMC) and Penicillin Integrated Industries (Pen-G) – cover key stages of the pharmaceutical production chain, from advanced granule manufacturing to the extraction of active ingredients and basic materials used in antibiotics.
The initiative marks a significant step in developing Oman's pharmaceutical industry, increasing local value addition and positioning national products in international markets.
Al Wajer Pharmaceutical Industries, which began operations in 2018, has developed more than 18 specialised products and exports its entire production to markets across Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East.
Meanwhile, Drug Manufacturing Company (DMC) is establishing advanced industrial infrastructure to supply essential active pharmaceutical ingredients to regional manufacturers, supporting local production and integrating Oman into global pharmaceutical supply chains.
Penicillin Integrated Industries (Pen-G) aims to manufacture key raw materials for antibiotics and supply major international markets, particularly the United States, further strengthening the integration of Oman's pharmaceutical manufacturing sector.
The three projects are expected to support economic diversification, attract specialised investments, facilitate technology transfer and create skilled employment opportunities for Omani nationals in technical and specialised fields.
Their development also offers opportunities to strengthen cooperation with international pharmaceutical companies and expand research, development and innovation, while leveraging North Al Batinah's industrial and logistical advantages.
The projects come amid growing global efforts to diversify pharmaceutical supply chains and secure essential medical supplies.
The initiative supports the objectives of Oman Vision 2040 by promoting advanced manufacturing, increasing the contribution of the industrial sector to GDP and developing a competitive, innovation-driven pharmaceutical industry, positioning Oman as a regional and international hub for pharmaceutical production.
