Muscat: The committee responsible for regulating the use of biotechnology and its products, as well as the protection of genetic data in the Sultanate of Oman, today convened an expanded ministerial meeting with stakeholders across the biotechnology sector.
The meeting was attended by a number of ministers and senior officials from relevant authorities, members of the Steering Committee, and the central team affiliated with the committee. It was held in collaboration with the international consultancy firm executing the project, with the presence of a representative from Oman India Fertilizer Company (OMIFCO), the project's funding entity.
This ministerial meeting was convened to reaffirm the imperative of achieving national consensus among decision-makers from various government entities, with the aim of discussing the final draft of the National Biotechnology Strategy for the Sultanate of Oman, in preparation for its submission to the Council of Ministers for approval upon its completion.
It is noteworthy that a series of specialized workshops have been conducted over the past months, with broad participation from specialists and technical professionals working in the biotechnology sector in the Sultanate of Oman.
These workshops resulted in the endorsement of the outputs of the project's third phase, which pertain to the prioritization of the pillars of the biotechnology sectors—namely red, green, and white biotechnology—alongside the adoption of the work plan for the fourth phase.
This phase includes governance proposals and an operational model for the preparation of preliminary feasibility studies for 12 short-term, actionable opportunities to be implemented within the Eleventh Five-Year Development Plan in the field of biotechnology, in accordance with the established timeline for the completion of the National Biotechnology Strategy project.
